Inspired

Last weekend I went to the Australasian Quilt Convention and though there has not been much stitching happening here recently I really enjoy seeing the work of the talented artists who can work magic with fabric and thread.
This was the 10th year of AQC and the challenge theme was 10. Lots of very creative entries were displayed showing the individuals interpretation of this theme. The standard was very high and I have no idea how the judges decide which ones are the best, I really had a hard time choosing a favourite but this entry titled, Ten in my Tank today, by Jill Hessing appealed to my sense of humour. See the Cheeky Kitty.

Titled: Ten in my tank today by Jill Hessing

Though I have no need for any more fabric until I start sewing lots of things again I did pick a little yarn.
Pediboo Sock, a wool and bamboo yarn, in a lavender colourway.

Lucky I have been knitting and crocheting all the things recently as I attended the Official opening of Unwind Craft Cafe on Friday evening and won a Bendigo Woollen Mills voucher so new yarn will be coming to live at my house real soon. Well as soon as I decide which colours I really need. Ha

Wishing you a wonderful Tuesday evening.

The Mother made me!

I Spent a lovely afternoon with The Mother at AQC today.
We looked at all the amazing quilts and decided that there are some people out there with those special clocks that give extra hours - lots of exquisite work and lots of little pieces of fabric.
The 12x12 collection of quilts was beautiful up close.
All the pics here are from the art quilt section - sorry I didn't get the makers details, but most of them were advertised by the organisers before the event.

This lady is taller than the main body of the quilt and totally looked like an admirer
The sense of depth in all of these captured my attention - it was hard to know where to look there was so much detail in all of these, created by the different techniques employed.
Totally thread painted kitty - Cute

Thursday evening saw me once again distracted by my hook and these yarns. Fortunately these did not add up to a great amount of yarn so it was a quick to finish project - I need a little instant gratification sometimes.
Inspired by a doily I started playing with different stitches and made a decorative top.
Then I added sides to make this slouchy beanie style hat.
Best bit - no pattern reading required.
Back to the other projects now - I am on the leg of the sock and the design is working up nicely, the coloured bobbly piece has grown too.
While I saw all the lovely stitchy sewing things today, I am definitely in a woolly creating phase, I was not tempted to buy anything. Shocking I know!
Have a wonderful Sunday doing what makes you happy.

Red and White all over

The quilt show was amazing in so many ways - not least of all the setting.

It is difficult to take photo's of big quilts in small spaces but I snapped a few which caught my attention.

I love the way these blocks create the secondary circle pattern.
(I do like a nice circle)

I had recently seen this block in a different colour way so I was intrigued by the red and white version, you may be able to see the sweet tulips in the quilting too. Very nice indeed.

Now this little bed was so sweet - those triangles were tiny.

The quilts on the tables were part of the theme and as it had been raining there were droplets on the plastic making for this fun effect.

(no pics of the scones I ate those before I got the camera out)

I know you can't see the detail here but the idea is fabulous - this is made from a selection of redwork stitcheries with a Christmas theme which are then bordered to make this amazing quilt.
A note on the label said it was made to celebrate the whole family being home for Christmas. As the stitcher's family will all be celebrating together again this year she has a new project planned.

Oh, look another circle one - this starts at orange in the middle and end on the outside with a deep red - I love the way it moves. Fortunately it was up high enough that it didn't feel like the world was spinning.

Loving the white on red in this one which was simply hand quilted in a cross hatch behind the applique.
The basket was made up of tiny pieces all needle turned.

A simple hexie mini,

with all those fussy cut centres.

There are no pictures of the antique quilts here as it was too dark in there.

After admiring all the lovelies I came home and sat down with the pin wheel quilt and started hand sewing the binding. I'm about half done.

Funny thing is that I am missing admiring this happy quilt, as for the past week it has been hanging over my sewing table which I walk past regularly. Now it is just a white table - boring!

Happy creating with what ever colours you choose.

Waverley Quilt Show

The Waverley Patchworkers in Melbourne sure are diverse and talented.

This quilt was one from the Art Quilt group. It is quite small and the trees are free machine embroidered - the colours were amazing - perfect depiction of winter.

A lovely bright Kaffe quilt using the drunkards path block - just stunning.

One for the boys - this quilt used a combination of Train themed prints and pieced sashing and borders for the train tracks.

A quilt which summed up summer at the beach - lovely bright colours.

The next two quilts are made from the same design by the same stitcher - Oh what a difference colour can make.

A beautiful Baltimore inspired quilt in the prettiest purples and greens - this quilt was huge.

Another take on Drunkards path - this time made with string blocks in two colours - Love the effect - warm and moving.

This last quilt was called the Decade quilt - and for good reason.

It has the most amazing embroidery on not just the patches but also the borders. Lots of luxury fabrics in the most beautiful colours.

A lovely afternoon spent appreciating the work which goes into not just the quilts but the hosting of a show like this. Well done. How did you spend your Sunday afternoon? Happy Crafting
